Rules of Texas Holdem Poker
May 20th, 2008Texas Holdem is the most popular version of poker played in poker rooms and online casinos in the USA. Texas Holdem is a community card game where players can use any combination of the five community cards and their own hole cards to make their hand – as opposed to stud and draw games, where each player has a separate hand. Texas holdem was slow to gain popularity in the 20 th century, but is now one of the most popular online poker while play texas holdem games.
A texas holdem hand begins with each player at the table being dealt two cards face down. These cards are the hole cards, and are the only cards that each player will receive individually. These cards will only be revealed during the showdown.
The hand will begin with a ‘pre flop’ round of betting – starting to the left of the dealer (or big blind, if blinds are used) and moving clockwise. Some poker rooms and online casinos do not use blinds, so check the rules before you play online poker.
After the pre-flop bets are made, if there are at least two players remaining in the hand, the dealer will deal three face up ‘community cards’ – called the flop. After the flop there will be a second betting round. If there are still players remaining, another card will be dealt – called the turn. Then there will be another round of betting, followed by a final card – called the river.
In poker rooms and bricks and mortar casinos, the dealer will burn a card before the flop, turn and river. The term ‘burn’ refers to taking a card and discarding it face down next to the discard pile. This is to prevent anyone from getting an advantage by recognising markings on the cards. This practice is not used when you are playing online poker at a casino online.
In the event that a player bets, but all the other players fold, then the betting player wins the pot and is not required to show his hole cards. If there are two or more players remaining after the river, then a showdown will occur, and the remaining players make the best five card hand they can from their hole cards and the community cards. They can use any combination of those cards they wish – including making their hand entirely from the community cards – a practice called ‘playing the board’.
If the best hand is shared by more than one player, then the pot is split equally among the winning players.
Cash games of poker are divided into two different kinds – no limit, and fixed limit. The maximum size of bet is fixed in fixed limit holdem, which makes it harder to bluff. Lower stakes, and limit games are quite popular when playing online poker. No limit texas holdem is often seen in poker rooms, but can also be played at a casino online. Doyle Brunson once said that “[No limit and fixed limit...] games are so different that there are not many players who rank with the best in both types”.
